Find Your Eureka Moment

Discovery is the heart of science. Clarkson's science studies program gives you a chance to discover a discipline you love before declaring a major.

As a science studies student, you'll build a foundation in mathematics and the sciences. At the same time, you'll explore the breadth of options available to you, from biology to data science, psychology to physics. By the time you're ready to focus on a discipline and select a major, you'll have the confidence to know you're on a path that excites you.

Why Major in Science Studies at Clarkson?

If you want a front-row seat to examine which scientific discipline is the most engaging or fulfilling, Clarkson is a great place to start. You'll have a chance to work in world-class labs and research centers, like our Center for Advanced Materials Processing or Shipley Center for Innovation.

At Clarkson, though, the who is even more important than the what. Our small size means you'll work closely with faculty. Our 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio means you'll have numerous opportunities to get to know your professors and learn why they're passionate about science. These types of meaningful interactions can shape who — and what — you'll become.

What You'll Learn

Thinking about majoring in science but aren’t sure about which discipline to select? Clarkson’s science studies program presents the opportunity to explore biology, chemistry, physics and other scientific disciplines available before you select a major.

Upon selecting this course of study, you’ll:

  • Work with an academic advisor to develop an individualized course of study for the first semester.
  • Select an approved program reflecting your individual goals and academic and career objectives by the end of your first year.

Within this arrangement:

Every year, Clarkson students put their skills to work in real-world settings — in places ranging from the local volunteer rescue squad to international pharmaceutical companies. Clarkson's Career Center can help find a co-op experience that works for you.

We're one of the smallest universities on U.S. News & World Report's list of nationally ranked institutions. Combine that with our world-class research, and it means you'll have numerous chances to participate in meaningful discoveries. More than 250 undergraduates a year participate in sponsored research with professors. Learn more about research at Clarkson.

Students who choose the Science Studies program work directly with our Director of University Advising and support faculty members, who assist them in finding the right personalized pathway. Through a partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Advising, students in the sciences also have additional resources for advisement.

You’ll select courses related to your interests, discuss your goals and learn more about hands-on learning opportunities. Students have until their third semester to select a major, be it through the School of Arts & Sciences or another Clarkson University school.

Are you curious? As a science studies major, that's a trait that will serve you well. These are some of the fields you may ultimately decide to focus on:

Biochemistry

Conduct lab-based research that can lead to better medicine, cleaner air and personalized healthcare in our biochemistry program. Learn about the biochemistry major.

Biology

Study the core concepts of biology, including health and biomedical science (human and animal), biotechnology and biomolecular science and environmental science. Learn about the biology major.

Chemistry

Chemistry, often called the "central science," is the core of many of Clarkson's science programs. Gain a thorough understanding of properties, composition and matter while participating in research with real-world implications. Learn about the chemistry major.

Computer Science

Software drives the modern world. As a computer science student, you'll learn the coding skills to build that software. You'll also gain the problem-solving skills needed to push the limits of artificial intelligence, protect private information from prying eyes and make sense of huge piles of data. Learn about the computer science major.

Data Science

Governments and businesses alike have recognized the power hidden in troves of data. Learn to solve real-world challenges with this major, which draws heavily on math and statistics. Learn about the data science major.

Physics

Physics deals with rules that govern the inanimate world — but the field itself is hardly still. Work alongside professors while contributing to research in areas like astrophysics, quantum computation and nanomaterials. Learn about the physics major.

Psychology

Psychologists study the mind and behavior, from exploring the activity of individual brain cells to examining interactions between individuals and society. Learn about the psychology major.

Launch a rocket. Blow your horn in the Jazz Ensemble. Or, blow off some steam on the soccer pitch. With over 200 clubs and organizations at your fingertips, you won't have free time for long.

Explore Clarkson's clubs and organizations

Our SPEED program (Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design) brings 16 different competitive engineering teams under one banner. So dream up a diesel-burning snowmobile, build a lightweight, super-strong steel bridge or even send a concrete canoe on the open water — our SPEED teams are waiting.

Career Possibilities

You'll start as a science studies major, but there's no telling where you'll wind up — because the possibilities are as wide as the disciplines you can study.

To focus your direction, you can choose from several pre-professional concentrations and advising tracks. Some of those options include:

Recent Employers and Grad Schools

In recent years, our graduates have taken jobs and gone on to graduate work at places including:

  • Bristol Myers Squibb
  • Corning Inc.
  • GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)
  • Google
